The Health Camp held by volunteers and students last September was featured in a magazine issued by VSO Netherlands (Volunteer Service Overseas – Bangladesh), who helped organize the event.  IUBAT is an active partner organization of VSO, and two of their international volunteers, Jim Ofonda and Neils van der Verge, were integral in conducting the activities of the camp.

The article features several scenes with Jim and IUBAT students interacting with the local patients; however, the text is in Dutch.  Jim has been a long-time volunteer with IUBAT for two years and his term is now coming to an end.

Thank you Jim, for all the support you have given our students and volunteers over the years and best of luck to you.

The Lancet, a leading medical journal, recently published a special series on improvements in the survival of infants and children under 5 years of age, life expectancy, immunization coverage, and tuberculosis control in Bangladesh. Calling it a “remarkable success story for health”, the editors note these gains occurred “despite low spending on health care, a weak health system, and widespread poverty.”

The six-part series takes a comprehensive look at one of the “great mysteries of global health”, and this web link also includes podcasts and comments.

Professor M. Alimullah Miyan, Founder and Vice Chancellor of IUBAT, received the prestigious Flagship Project Award from United Nations University in November for creating the report, “Knowledge Based Area Development (KBAD)”, which aims to break the vicious cycle of poverty in Bangladesh through building a prosperous society based on capacity-building.

The primary objective of KBAD is to ensure that young people from all over Bangladesh have the opportunity to gain higher education in marketable knowledge and career skills.
